Growing the garden of government
It has been twenty-five or so years ago since I first heard the American political system described as a "welfare state". I was stunned by the realization that this might be in fact the sad truth about the state of affairs in this country. But now it is obvious that my worst fears had already been realized even then at the dawning of the Reagan years.
Our political system consists of an "axis of evil" in the persons of two cooperating gangs masquerading as political parties creating theater for the media, while they go about their real business of stealing working Americans blind. For our purposes, we shall call these gangs "the war party",and the "welfare party".
The war party recently started two wars, and is threatening to start more. The welfare party supports these wars because their polling indicates that opposing them might adversely affect their chances of getting what they really want; control of the 2.5 trill per year federal money spigot.
Despite what either of them say, they both use welfare, and warfare for fertilizer to grow the garden of government. The cancerous non-stop growth of government over the last sixty years documents clearly how successful these gangs have been.
The revolution will not be televised.

I'm not buying that the "war party" started anything. They've gone about the business of defending the rights granted us by our Creator and guaranteed by the Constitution, though definitely not aggressively enough.
The "welfare party" hasn't supported any of this, largely because they can't even seem to muster enough support for the Constitution to recognize that it even exists.
Both do use welfare, though, Sage, to grow the garden of government. You are definitely right about that. Unfortunately, they're not growing much that's productive - only useless weeds.

Whether you "buy it" or not is not at issue here. The fact is that it perfectly serves the agenda of those who are the enemies of the freedom of the American people, and ultimately of all people everywhere."We have met the enemy and he is us".Without a climate of war, there is no need,or excuse for the welfare mind.
Refrain from restricting the creativity of the people with supposed calamities and the problem will correct itself.Let freedom ring, and reign supreme. The proponents of the "divine right theory of kings' were not all killed off by the revolution. Jefferson knew this, which is why he said"the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots, and tyrants", a point that I am sure is well taken by our own present "George the Third".If this man could have his way,and really speak his heart, the words would sound no different than his namesake of the 18th century. Unfortunately, his name is legion among the ilk of Washington politicos in our times. The guns of Iraq are sadly pointed in the wrong direction. The revolution will not be televised.

The anti-war crowd will disagree with you here, unfortunately. My useless weeds analogy is just sooo appropriate.

Yeah, that's true, but that is only because they have been beguiled into thinking the enemy is the "other guy',which is of course the same problem that the "other guy" has too. This is the plan of those who rule to keep truth forever a casualty
while blaming someone else for the problem. It is the reason for the 'malaise' that we have found ourselves helplessly mired in for the last sixty or so years. There has to be a bogeyman, and it has to be a "supposed calamity" created by the "other guy". In this instant the double perils of war and welfare are working quite nicely to increase the power of those who would be kings, and those who would make them so to the benefit of both. This,of course creates more malaise for them to further their end, which is to further erode the rights of the people ad infinitum!
